HISTORY (YONPHU-LINEAGE)

history

Yonphu Dungyued (Lineage) is a descendant of Terton Retna Lingpa or Rinchen Lingpa (གཏེར་སྟོན་རཏྣ་གླིང་པ།) known as “Treasure Discoverer” in English. And he is one of the eight lingpas1. This lineage came to be known as Yonphu Dungyued 2 much more later when one of his sons, known as Garab Dorji came and meditated in the hilltop of the present-day known as Yonphula ཡོན་ཕུལ།. The young villagers who went to fetch fire wood found this great master in deep meditation.

The boys were in the dilemma of accepting this creature as Human or beast because of his outer appearance. On hearing this story, the elders of the village decided to make a visit and know about it. They were shocked by the wonderful master meditating right near their village. After intense requests from the elders to come to their village as their guidance in which all the villagers were ready to offer the whole village under his guidance in return. So the name of the village came to be known as Yonphula, meaning the hill being offered to Lama for his kindness in being their teacher. No sooner than he came to settle in YonphuLa than he built a small Temple known as Choegyued Lhakhang3 at present.

Since then, his direct descendants came to be known as Yonphu Dungyued, and the whole Villagers were known as Yonphu Choegyued 4. His successors never failed in taking care of the Dharma activities in the area for many generations. As time passed, somewhere in the 19th century, there were misunderstandings between the petty rulers, and many mini wars broke out in the locality. As a result, the brothers had to evade the civil war.

The eldest of the sons named Phajo Karma Tsewang came to settle in Shingkhar Lauri (The Valley where our monastery is situated now) and started his lineage, helping infinite beings in the area. His lineage was called Yonphu Dungyued, and followers and patrons who followed him and settled along with him were still called Yonphu Choegyed. My grandfather is the great-great-grandson of him. To this date, people have great respect and obedience to this lineage and have equal hope and expectation to help them with their suffering.
